Why Merry Christmas
Why do I love Christmas? I love Christmas for so many reasons. Christmas is not just the time of exchanging gifts. Oh, dear reader, it is so much more. It is about knowing the truest gift that any man has ever received. The greatest gift to mankind. That gift is Jesus Christ.
A lot of people do not understand the secret behind this seemingly unusual celebration. Truth be told. if we all understand the reason for the celebration, we will be compelled to celebrate Christmas every day. Is this an exaggeration? No!
One read through the gospel of Luke is all it takes to ignite our minds, set our faces aglow and our hearts fluttering with excitement as we discover the love of God for mankind through the prophecy of Zacharias, the father of John the Baptist.
The Bible says, “Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, For He has visited us and accomplished redemption for His people, Luke 1:68
So let me tell you why merry Christmas.
1. God has visited us.
Zacharias prophecy stated that God has visited us. Amazing. God did not visit us in anger but came to bring us back to himself since we had been alienated from him. God came in the flesh to reveal Himself to us. God loves man with an unbelievable love. Do you see now why we have to celebrate this great love of God? He did not abandon us but decided to visit us. If the President of your country, your favorite singer, or someone you’ve always admired from a distance were to visit you personally, how would you feel all day after the visit? I am sure you would feel so important. You will tell almost everyone you know. It calls for a celebration because something important is happening to you. Now the one visiting is not just an ordinary person but the God who created you. Whoot! Whoot!! That’s a reason to be merry.
2. His Visit had both a personal and cosmic purpose
He came to redeem us. What does it mean to redeem? He came to rescue, save and deliver us from sin and sins. He came to save us from total alienation from God. The whole creation fell when Adam and Eve fell. The human soul fell under the control of a power that wants us to always choose the exact opposite of what we should choose. Even when we don’t want to, we choose that which we regret, that which we dislike ourselves for, that we see is selfish but stubbornly cling to anyways. Everyone born of a woman became the prisoner of war for the devil. God knew that! So he came visiting, WITH A PURPOSE. Knowing that no one could rescue, save or deliver totally except the man that has no sin nature; knowing that humans are sinners not because of choice made but by nature; God solved this dilemma by coming Himself in the flesh as man to rescue mankind. What a great deliverance! I’ll celebrate that! I’ll be merry for that!! The God that came in the flesh is described in Book of Isaiah 9:6,
”For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace.”
It is Merry Christmas, therefore, because of the great privilege of being visited by the Lord of lords and God of gods, visited with the purpose to do that which we can’t ever do on our own. It is Merry Christmas because we are set free, restored, delivered from iniquities (sin) and trespasses (sins). We are no more POW! Let us celebrate the One who loves us so much. MERRY CHRISTMAS.
