It’s a universal truth that every human being faces one trouble after another. No one is
immune to life’s problems and challenges. We all share in this common experience.
Jesus teaches us the secret of weaving obeying the Word of God into our everyday living in
such a way that it forms a tower that can stand the test of time. And when we go through the
tests and triumphs because we did the hard work of obedience; it delights the LORD. It not
only delights him, He shows us off to the world, like a proud parent delights in showing off
His children.
The amazing thing is as tough as troubles and challenges are, the LORD provides us the
solutions because He is not only our Father but also our Teacher, the one who preps the tests.
That should give you peace. Jesus says, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may
have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
Matthew 16:33. In Jesus, we have peace that is not available in this world. The power of
God’s Word, the answer key to our lives’ tests, is our source of strength and hope. In the
storm of life, we can have peace that passes all understanding. So our role is to practice. This
is no different from how a good student practices before a test. Not knowing when it will
come but ready for when it does.
Jesus strikes this vital point in the conclusion of His “Sermon on the Mount.” Jesus
emphasized the importance of practicing the Word of God we listen to. Jesus used an
illustration to drive His point home in Matthew 7: 24-27,
“ Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a
wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came,
and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a
rock. 26 And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be
likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: And the rain descended, and
the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the
fall of it.” Jesus then explained the difference between wise and foolish builders to
emphasize the outcome of choosing to, or to not read and practice the word of God.
1. Both are building a house
2. Both chose a foundation: there is one supreme difference – the foundation
3. Both experience rains, floods, and winds beating upon their houses
4. Both heard the instructions.
a. One heard and obeyed: experienced a great rescue
b. One heard and did not obey: experienced a great fall.
Both the wise and the foolish are builders. They both listened to Jesus’ teachings, one
obeyed, the other didn’t. Their lives may look similar, but the foundation makes a great
difference. Jesus knows the storm will come. The sure way for victory over a storm is the
foundation of our lives. The Christian who obey the teaching of Christ will go through the
storm and come out stronger. However, for a Christian who neglects the Word of God and
does not practice it, the consequence of that nonchalant attitude is very disastrous. When
the rains, floods, and winds of life come, the foundation will be too weak to withstand the
onslaught. ARE YOU USING THE WORD OF GOD TO BUILD THE FOUNDATION OF YOUR LIFE
OR ARE YOU IGNORING THE WORD OF GOD? Weave your life with the Word of God. Obey
Him; You will live through the storm.
